Hot Foiling Stamped Images

I know this is nothing to do with the Scan n Cut but most crafters use several different machines so you may well be interested in this video.

In a nutshell it is my way of hot foiling a heat embossed stamped image on the Go Press and Foil machine.

Hope you find it of use.

Brand New Scan N Cut Machines due out any time now …

I am quite sure that by now you have all heard of the fact that there is a new “Brother” on the block.  There are two machines about to be launched (in Europe) (and have already been launched int he USA).  The 1000 and the 1200 – these two numbers are prefixed but the prefixes might well be different in different countries.

The basic difference from what I have gleaned is, other than the price, that the 1000 is probably more geared to card crafting whilst the 1200 is geared to both card crafting and for needle crafting (.pes files), it has more patterns in the machines memory and additional fonts.  Obviously there is a lot more to the differences than that but I have no doubt that you will do your own research as and when you feel the need to do so.

The difference, in a nutshell, from our original sNc’s and these new ones is the fact that the blades are now automatic and can detect the depth of medium on the mat and cut accordingly; it can now cut up to a maximum of 3mm; the scanner is now a whopping 600 dpi; it has a couple of departments to store tools and  it can cut vinyl fed in via a roll feed (additional item/cost) without being supported by a mat.  Both new machines are wi-fi so you don’t have to rely on a computer if you are happy with the 1300 designs or so contained on the machine.

I thought long and hard but in the end I couldn’t resist so I have placed my order for the SDX1200.  Why did I choose the 1200?  I certainly don’t need it as I have never cut fabric on my other machine so I could well have bought the slightly cheaper model, however the 1200 was on offer and includes the roll feeder so in actual fact it was a simple choice in that it worked out far cheaper than buying the 1000 and adding on the roll feed on.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it !!

I am anticipating that delivery will be in the next week or two so not too long to wait.

I believe it is due for release in the UK at the end of the month/November but don’t quote me.  I also have no idea as to the price that it might be sold for.

If you haven’t already seen a photo of it here it is – sadly not

as decorative as our current machines but I have no doubt that we will all customise our own machines to suit our personalities.

just a thought…. Christmas is just round the corner!! x

New update for Canvas desktop app

Just in case you haven’t used your Canvas desktop app of late, there has been another update and you can now download any of the images that you have in the Canvas library (web version) which means you have more power to do stuff.  It would also appear that they have added more shortcuts for those of us who prefer to use a keyboard shortcut rather than clicking on the mouse and choosing an option.  Great stuff

Lovely Free .fcm Christmas Tree Download

Hi Folks

Just found this on the USA Brother site  https://www.brother-usa.com/scanncut/ it is on the home page – you just have to scroll down to find it.

It is approximately 12 x 12 ish by the look of it but I have reduced it right the way down and it has not lost any of its beauty.  I embossed it onto green parchment and love the results.

img_20161110_183210

I line embossed it on a pressure of -3 and went over it twice, possibly could have done it at -2 but was worried about tearing the parchment.

Hope you enjoy this lovely free gift from Brother USA x

Region Embossing – without the need to create a folder

Since my last post I have had a chance to have a play with this and it works perfectly well.

When you create your template follow all the normal procedure up until the moment you are asked to cut out the template.

Cut a piece of the template material to a size that is slightly larger in width than the design and ensure that it is long enough for the 3 sets of dashed lines to be cut at the bottom

img_20161110_144051 Obviously this depends whether you are cutting landscape or portrait, in my case I went for portrait.

Proceed to cut out your template.  It will initially cut the 3 dashed lines and then go on to cut the first side of the design – as soon as it starts to move on to cut the duplicate shape “press the stop/start button”

img_20161110_144104 you have then cut just half of the template folder along with the dashed lines (these are necessary!)

Pop out the cut pieces and cut along the lowest set of dashed lines.

img_20161110_144435 img_20161110_144700 place your cardstock on the embossing mat and then place the template with the (what was, the middle set of dashed lines) set along the bottom of the mat aligned along the blue line.  Tape down the template at the top to make sure it doesn’t move and proceed to the scanning section followed by the embossing.

This way, if you tape the stencil at the top you can then lift the template up to see if you are happy with the depth of emboss prior to removing it (see below)

img_20161110_145015

This is the result I got – I used a pressure of 4 for this emboss so it could obviously have been deeper and crisper had I wanted to do it.

img_20161110_145336   et voilà, I hope this helps and it will save you some money on template material

Difference between Line Emboss and Region Emboss

img_20161110_133124Possibly not the easiest to see but I did the same design in 3 different ways.  Have just rubbed some Nuvo Mousse on to bring out the embossing.

The design on the far left is done as a ‘line emboss’ as you can see, pretty good but not very deep.

The design on the far right is done as a’region emboss’ and is a nice deep emboss.

The design in the middle was an experiment – I wondered why it was necessary to cut the design twice (being a skin flint, I like to save money where I can!) so I scanned it without folding it and then embossed it – there is a very slight difference in the depth of the emboss but probably it isn’t that noticeable and it could just be my imagination!

This afternoon I will have a go at making a template without having to make it into a folder and I shall report back shortly, providing nothing crops up in the mean time!

Region Embossing – hopefully how to!

Today is a day off for me and as I have caught up with all my chores I decided what the heck, I am going to have a “me day”.

Decided I would have a go at ‘Region Embossing’  I chose a snowflake from the machine, shrunk it down, copied it, aligned it, grouped it then duplicated to form a snowflake background.  Simple, yes of course.

The next stage however was not quite so simple as I was asked to set up the ‘Initial Settings’ so, if you haven’t already done this I will walk you through it.

These are the screens you will initially see when you go to region emboss img_20161101_123800 img_20161101_123809

the next 3 screens follow

img_20161101_123823

I don’t actually own a mid tack mat so I attached the sheet to my standard mat

2 more screens

img_20161101_124155 img_20161101_124236 as you can see it doesn’t actually tell you what pressure setting to use so I used -3 and hoped for the best!

img_20161101_124458 you then have to check how it cuts

img_20161101_124508 img_20161101_124514img_20161101_125823img_20161101_125244img_20161101_125257 it is a little difficult to see on the photo but when you fold the template in half underneath you have numbers cut into the paper and you need to find the one that closest matches the black lines (I actually used a torch to make sure it was the best match!) img_20161101_125417img_20161101_125459img_20161101_125505   img_20161101_125339  I set mine to +2 but obviously everyone is slightly different.

I have no idea how an expert can suggest you keep the sheet in its entirety as as soon as you initialise these setting it gets cut up!

You are now ready to start your first ‘Region Emboss’ as per the followingimg_20161101_125846

img_20161101_130405 img_20161101_130428img_20161101_131106  img_20161101_131350

img_20161101_131442   img_20161101_131455  img_20161101_131507

img_20161101_131532 img_20161101_131944  img_20161101_144002

img_20161101_143950 don’t panic if your design hasn’t cut through as you next get the opportunity to cut it again (which I had to)

img_20161101_144019 img_20161101_144745   img_20161101_144800

Now for the problem I encountered.  Everything looks great, however, don’t do as I did – the template I made, whilst it looks pretty perfect, was in actual fact not on account that the snowflakes I cut were actually too small to be embossed !!  Oh well, I won’t make that mistake again and hopefully I have saved you doing that as well.

Line Embossing – how not to & how to!!

I promised that when I received my kit I would give it a go and report back ….

I tried the ‘line emboss’ function first.  As my embossing mat was new, and I have dogs and cats, I decided to cut the protective sheet in half so that the part not being used was covered and free from potential cat hair!  Loaded my design and some parchment, drew the design with one of the little pens received way back when before the pen tool and drew the shape.  I then put in my sparkling new 1.5 embossing tool, set the pressure as suggested by a certain expert and it was a complete disasterimg_20161025_203257 img_20161025_203327 as you can see at a pressure of -2 the embossing tool ripped right through the parchment and gouged a huge rip into my brand new, never been used before embossing mat – yikees! (well I possibly might have said something a tiny bit stronger than that!)

I left things till a day or two later on account of working and had a go again, this time I used a pressure of -4 and embossed it twice at that pressure.  A much better result can be seen below (the shape is from the machine if you are interested in using it). The moral of this story is start as low as you can because you can always increase the pressure but it is too late when you have wrecked your pristine mat!img_20161101_122743
