Brother Scan N Cut Hints & Tips

Mats

  • don’t be too worried if in the early days you cut through your mat – you won’t be the first person to do it!  Selotape over the area on the back of the mat and you will be surprised at how long it will hold out – even through washing the mat!
  • Clean your mat regularly to prolong its life.  There are a couple of ways you can do this.  A quick fix is with a baby wipe – use the cheap ones without baby lotion in them.  They can clean off excess dirt and lint.  If they are really grubby then I find the best way is to pop them in the sink and take a washing up brush with warm water and washing up liquid and give it a good old scrub.  Sounds bizarre I know but it cleans them a treat an will very often rejuvenate the tackiness.
  • I have done this on a couple of occasions with my original mat that I am still using and that has been repaired due to cutting through it.  This mat has to be 4 months old and I use it almost every day.
  • The cleaner your mat the better the cuts and the longer your blades will last.
  • If your mat looses tackiness there are a few things you can do before binning it – first try washing it as above if no joy then either try spraying the back of your card stock with a re-positionable adhesive but please never spray the actual mat.  The mat has guides on that are read by the machine so you may interfere with these and you cannot guarantee not to get the spray on the side where the rollers travel and this will gum up your machine.  There is a glue that you can buy on Amazon and it comes from the USA which you mix with water and paint onto your mat which does an amazing restoration – I will do a clip of how to do this in the fullness of time.

BLADES

  • If you have a problem cutting first check that there is no debris on around the blade tip.  Unscrew the blade holder and check inside and round the blade.
  • Check the blade has no chips out of it – you will probably need to look through a magnifying glass to do this effectively.
  • WARNING!  For obvious reasons extreme care should be taken when handling the blade – it might only be tiny but it is exceedingly sharp!
  • Always keep a couple of spare new blades as a stand-by – accidents happen and always at an inopportune moment and there is nothing more frustrating that struggling to get a project finished and having to rely on a craft knife to finish off the job!

 CUTTING

  • If you are experiencing problems such as snagging check your blade as above.
  • If all appears in order check your blade depth and pressure.  Sometimes too much pressure can cause the blade to drag
  • Are you cutting on too slow a speed?  For almost every cut I leave my speed set to 5 (obviously there are times when you need to reduce it) but as a rule of thumb I cut on 5 – again this gives you less drag and in general a cleaner cut
  • If all else fails change your blade, it is probably dull and it isn’t worth wasting your good card stock on a dull blade!

  • When cutting out layers – and the internal part of your design is very intricate you can experience problems if the outer part of your design is cut first.  Making sure you paper/card is well adhered to the mat will not necessarily do the trick unless you ensure that the basic shape is cut last – see the following photo
  • Heart
  • if the outer line of the heart was cut before the inside then it is more than likely that your paper/card will move during the  cutting process.  To avoid this happening bring the shape layer (in this instance the outer heart shape) to the front of the design to ensure that it cuts after the filigree work has cut.  The Brother Scan n Cut (like most other machines) cuts in the  order that you design – in the above photo I drew the heart first before the inserting the filigree shape (designed by Monica).  I therefore had to bring the heart shape to the front in Canvas before saving the final project.
  • To do this it is very simple when in Canvas click on the shape, then click on the Edit button at the top, pull down to ‘Order’ and then choose ‘Bring to Front’  If your item is all one piece you will have to break it apart first in order to do this.  Don’t forget to group it all together when you have done this so save having three million ‘bits’ to try to manipulate when you open it on you machine!

I will add more to this page as and when I can.  If you can’t find an answer please feel free to email me your question and if I can help I will be more than happy to.

  2. Hi, Thank you so much for sharing your help and the cutting files. This info and the free files have helped me so much. Sue – Australia

    • Maxine, it is my pleasure. If ever you are struggling please feel free to send me an email and if I can help you or can offer any solutions I would be more than happy to do so.

Haven’t posted anything new recently as have been busy with ‘proper’ work and 2 sick animals but I have some ideas floating round that I will try to get down on paper very shortly so do keep checking in x

    • Thank you so much Anne, I have some more to upload but at the moment am inundated with work work so haven’t had a chance to do anything since before Christmas but I do promise to add to the files over the coming months. Do enjoy your sNc and if ever you need any help don’t hesitate to send me a note and if I can help I will be only too happy too.

  3. Hi Anne thank you for all your helpful tips – here are a few things I have found helpful too: to resticky my mat I use the large ZIG glue pen with the jumbo chisel tip – BUT ALLOW TO COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE USING YOUR MAT – this stays sticky for ages and you can even still use your wet wipes to clean and it stays sticky – ALSO instead of ordinary sticky tape on back if you ut thru – use a good quality PACKAGING TAPE – AND REALLY PRESS DOWN WELL WITH A BRAYER TO REMOVE ALL AIR BUBBLES – this is less likely to unravel on the edges as time goes on.

  4. I just opened my SnC yesterday….I’m soo overwhelmed. My first try was to cut fabric…I had Steam A seam on the back of fabric….bad cut and I have the Steam A Seam stuck to my mat and can’t get it off. Got all the fabric pieces cleaned off but tried everything mentioned and can’t get the gluey layer off. Any suggestions?

  5. Thank you so much for all the information on your site, when you have the scanncut it changes the way you craft and everyday you learn something new but it is nice to know there are people like yourself who spend time helping others.
    So big thank you.

    • Hello Jennie, thank you for your kind comments – it is so nice to be able to help each other out and great to see how far and wide all the “Brother Scan N Cutters” live.

I have been so busy of late that I haven’t done anything on my sNc but I got the bug again last week when I got it out and started playing with it again, firstly by putting all the dies I have onto it (the ones that we have permission to) I enjoyed going into Canvas and taking out the stray lines and joining any that needed it.

I haven’t had the time to make any Christmas cards this year, it is not possible to buy them in France so I have used all the cards from previous years and made them into easel cards, die cut them to change their appearance and am very happy with the results.

Wishing you very best wishes for the coming season and I promise there will be some new things out there in the New Year.

      Anne x

  6. Just cleaned my mat using your tips. Thank you so much!! I was afraid this would become an expensive habit for sure. Now it’s as good as new.

    • I sometimes get this and then just try to reload or even turn my machine off and start again. Have you got anything covering the top (or bottom of the mat) where it reads the type of mat? Is there maybe a fold in one of the corners?

If you feed it in squarely then you should have no problems – shouldn’t matter the age of the mat – I am using one that is over 2 years old!

Try to feed in with both hands to make sure it goes in squarely – do you have another mat you can try just to ensure there isn’t an actual problem with the machine?

Failing that try contacting the support line and see what they say, they are always very helpful (you will have to email them)

      Hope that helps

      Anne x

    • why a short time? I have been using cutting machines for several years now and am still learning. The sNc is by far the best one I have ever owned and used though – enjoy it x

  7. Bonjour Anne, je viens de découvrir votre blog et je voulais vous remercier pour les fichiers que vous offrez ainsi que pour les trucs et astuces. Malheureusement, la traduction de Google en français n’est vraiment pas claire Cette partie m’intéresse particulièrement : “When cutting out layers – and the internal part of your design is very intricate you can experience problems if the outer part of your design is cut first. To avoid this happening bring the shape layer (in this instance the outer heart shape) to the front of the design to ensure that it cuts after the filigree work has cut. Avez vous une version cohérente à me proposer.
    Merci pour tout, bon week-end

    PS : j’ai la CM 840

    • Bonjour

  8. Thank you for the information and all the cutting files. This information may help me with a few problems (mainly ofmy own making isuspect).

    • My pleasure Jeanne, we all need help at times (me included quite obviously!) so if it does help with anything however complex or simple then I am happy to have passed on what I have learnt thus far.

      Happy Crafting Anne x

  9. i have just brought my scan and cut after seeing it on a craft show for ages but to be honest am ready to launch it out the window using the setting in guide its ripping the card not cutting through the card i have tried different setting but still no good have even brought new blades

    • Oh Ann, that is so sad, don’t give up yet. Forget the guide as it is just that “a guide” If you have only just bought your machine you shouldn’t need new blades yet.

Please contact me by email and let me know what type of card you are cutting and your settings and I will try and help you.

I have had my machine since it was first launched in the UK and yes, occasionally I have ruined paper/card but then I read loads and tried all sorts of different settings out making a spread sheet whilst I went and now I would have to honestly say, hand on heart that I rarely if ever have a bad cut, the worst I will get is having to double cut but to me that is not a problem.

I totally ignore anything said on C & C and as a rule of thumb I use a speed of 1, blade depth around 6 and a pressure of minus 2 with cardstock of 250gsm – for Adorable Scorable I use speed 1, blade 8, pressure minus 2.

A lot does depend on how you store your card/paper – if it is in a cold room then it does cut completely differently to being stored in a warm room.

I would say the only card I ever have a problem with is the Create & Craft 12×12 cardstock that come in a pad as it is not completely flat as it has a sort of raised pattern on it – this was actually advertised on a recent show so it is even possible you have bought it?

Don’t give up, it is the most amazing machine you can own – contact me again with what you are using and settings and I am sure we can get you cutting like a pro in no time.

      kind regards

      Anne x

  10. Hi Anne
Can you please tell me how to fill text in with the drawing function on Scan N Cut. I did as you said with the font converter doing one line at a time and saving this it works a treat. Now I am stuck on how to fill the text with colour any advice would be appreciated. I don’t seem to have your email address.
    Kind regards
    Lynn Duffy

    • Hi Lynn

I have sent a reply to your email address directly so do look in your spam mail if you don’t see it immediately. It will have my email address on it for you.

      kind regards

      Anne

  11. Hello Anne..thank you for all your hints and tips as a beginner it’s invaluable!!
Have you any settings for cutting Century pearl 300 GSM from Craters Companion?
I bought used machine and used twice now screen goes blank if I try to lift it up to standing position..
Machine will only work if screen lies flat..
Seller won’t refund me so have to hope machine will not go completely.
It’s a bad start but I will try to use it as is..
    Kind regards
    Jean

    • Hello Jean, thanks for looking in on me. Sorry to hear you have a problem with the screen standing up. It is not a problem to use it lying down at all so don’t worry on that score. You could try phoning/emailing Brother scan n cut directly as they are super helpful and would have your problem fixed in no time. However, if you don’t mind it lying down they just work as it is.

They are fantastic machines and very easy to get on with, you just need to play around with things as no two machines are completely the same. My advice for Centura Pearl is to try initially with a blade setting of maybe 5 and low pressure – 0 or 1 and then up the pressure if no joy before upping the blade depth. Try it out on some scraps of Centura and just cut a couple of small basic shapes rather than anything too complex to see how it goes. My machine I always have to use a blade setting or around 7 or 8 for most things but yours could be completely different. If I cut anything really intricate I often prefer to cut it twice rather than risk the card being dragged – the main thing is just have a good play with it, there really isn’t anything much that can go wrong with it. As I mentioned start with low blade setting and low pressure, increase pressure if needs be before trying a higher blade depth to avoid cutting through the mat! If you do, (we have all done it!) then just put some tape on the back of the mat to hold it together and continue as normal – I used a mat like that for 2 years or more!!

      Enjoy your machine! Anne x

    • Hello Jean
I recently used Hunkydory 300gsm cardstock and I used Speed 5 pressure 1 and blade 5 it cut through first time. Give this a try. I have cut through my mats several times and I use gaffa tape to stick my mats , it works quite well. I had to send my machine back to Brother for a new screen and I new mat installer. I wasn’t cheap to have repaired but it was worth it as a new machine would have cost £300. The only thing is you have to go through Germany to contact Brother. Happy crafting
      Lynn

  12. Hi Anne,

I have just come across your page. Thanks for sharing. I have had a Pazzles Inspiration and then a Pazzles InVue which were bought in England which I liked. (I live in Scotland). I had problems with InVue when it was under guarantee and because the company who sold it to me were not involved with Pazzles any more I had to contact Pazzles and it turned out that I had to return the machine to them which was going to cost me more than buying the machine just sending it one way. So I gave up on that. I have a Brother Scan n Cut CM900 and changed it for the SDX 1200 I love this machine, and trying to get used to it. I would like to make a box 8″ x 4″ and was looking for a pattern on how to make it. Can you give me any information on how to make this please?

    • Hi Isobel

I started off my cutting machine experience with a Pazzles but then sold that on to buy the Scan N Cut CM600 when it first launched in the UK, I then sold that on to upgrade to the CM900 which I realy loved but then when the SDX machines came out – I just had to get one so my CM900 is now in the process of being sold!

I have some box patterns somewhere on my computer so I will try to find one and send it on to you as soon as I can, might have to be later in the week as am busy at the moment.

      Thanks for your comments.

      Anne x

  13. Hi there,
I had a problem today with my paper screwing up instead of getting a clean. I read through your notes and found a solution (cutting speed too slow). I took your advice and solved the problem. Thank you for taking the time to help out people like me.
    Susan

  14. Hello there, I just come across your page while scrolling through for answers of my mat problem. Maybe you can help or assist me in this problem.

I use the scanNcut CM900 now for a year, I cut stencils with the machine but all of a sudden when I start cutting the mat starting to move one side and then to the other side, looks like the mat is dancing Lol. What am I doing wrong? This is the first time this is happening to me. I clean the mat, change the blade, set the cutting speed etc, nothing help. Please help. Many thanks.

    • Hello Adeleen, firstly I must apologise for not replying sooner and I do hope that by now you have sorted out your problem with the mat not loading correctly. My advice would be to make sure that the edges of the mat (on the back in particular) are clean and that if you haven’t already done so you clean the scanner glass which can be accessed easily on your machine. If it is dirty then it could be the cause of your problem. You just need to remove the cover and take a clean (preferably new) lint free anti-static cloth such as a micro fibre cloth and wipe the glass gently. It is amazing how much dust and particles can collect in this area when we are crafting!

I do hope you are enjoying your CM900 I used this up until recently when I bought the SDX1200 and it was my preferred machine since it launched. Happy Christmas

      Annee
